i think i’m a nerd, AI style

Have I mentioned before that I never watched AI until this season? Here’s why: I’m sometimes one of those people who doesn’t do something simply because everyone else IS doing it. So when everyone else thought Idol was the coolest thing since sliced bread, I decided I would NOT ever watch it. [Much like I decided that I would not do baby sign language with Ryan because it seems like the 'trendy' thing that everyone else is doing. Much like my brother's hatred of vests when everyone else likes vests.]

Anyhoo- back to the topic on hand: Idol. I always thought the show was over-hyped and never watched it. Until this season. FatJ and I have watched it since the first show…and I was pretty much immediately hooked. I don’t know what it is about the show, but I like it. And I will admit that I was a David A. fan from the get-go, but he lost me about halfway in. I mean, imagine an album of his. Would you be able to distinguish one song from the next? No. And I know he’s only 17 and is cute and innocent and it would rock his world if he won, but he’s just so stiff and predictable and uncomfortable-looking up there when he’s getting interviewed and stuff. Much like any of us would have been at 17. (Or would still be now.) I picture David A. singing in the Disney World parade or becoming a Christian rock teen pop idol. Still, I have a feeling he might win. Because of teenage girls. Damn them.

I don’t even need to talk about Syesha, do I?

Then there’s David C. At the beginning of the season, he didn’t really stand out in my mind as a front-runner. But then he started belting out these terrific rock versions of songs by Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, and Mariah Carey…and he had me. I’ve always been a sucker for a great rocker. (This includes my very own wonderful husband, who owns a guitar {note, that’s OWNS, not PLAYS}, and has a really awesome singing voice.) I think David Cook needs to win Idol. I think he deserves to win Idol. He is modest, reserved, calm, cool, collected…yet seems like he knows how to have fun when the time is right. And he has a really great voice, looks cool performing, and never seems full of himself. Have I downloaded his music to my ipod? Perhaps. Have I actually picked up the phone and (attempted to) vote for him? Perhaps.

Have I reached true nerd status? Indeed.
